I was bored in high school, I didn’t like the teachers. One day after I just left school and decided not to go back. My mom got really made at me and told me to go stay with my dad in New York. I decided to leave Philly and go to my dad’s. Dad understood me getting bored with school and he helped me get a GED. Dad also told me going to Manhattan Institute and how they could help me find out more about a job working in the health field.

Although I had visited New York many times while visiting my dad, I wasn’t that used to getting around in the city. Manhattan Institute is easy to find since it is very close to Penn Station which is where I come to from my dad’s house in Brooklyn. When I went to the school to check it out the girl at the desk told me that the next class that was about to start was the dialysis technician. I signed up for it because I was ready to get started.

I really enjoyed the classes and learning about how so many people are suffering from kidney problems. After six weeks I had completed my course and was ready to enter the health field to look for a job. I began to see how big the health care industry is. In every major city in the US the hospitals employ lots of people and they also pay pretty good too. I found a job in Philly since I wanted to be close to my mom. And started working at a hospital where I began to make friends with the dialysis patients. I learned at Manhattan Institute that sometimes the patients do not like the treatment because it gives them stress and makes them feels a little sick afterwards. And the family members who come in with the patient are also worried and stressed because of what the loved one is going through. A dialysis solution, also known as dialysate, acts as a cleansing solution and is pumped around the fibers. The fibers allow for waste and other fluids to pass from the blood and into the dialysate so these products can be be carried out of the body. The dialysate is a chemical formula that behaves similar to a sponge during its waste removal process. The exact formula of dialysate, per dialysis patient, is determined by a physician and is based on factors that include, but are not limited to: how the patient reacts to treatment and results of blood tests.

For more information on treatment and procedures for kidney failure, please click here

Three Credentialing Programs for Dialysis Technicians/Technologists

The Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission/NNCC

The Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) examination was co-developed by a the National Association of Nephrology Technicians/Technologists (NANT) and the American Nephrology Nurses’ Association (ANNA).

After six continuous months of working in nephrology technology, technicians are eligible to take the CCHT. The CCHT certification exam measures cognitive levels of understanding in four (4) dialysis practice areas: 1)clinical (50%), 2) technical (23%), 3) environmental (15%) and 4) role (12%)

The NANT acknowledges that the CCHT exam is an authentic measure of basic competency for hemodialysis patient care technicians. For information on the CCHT examination, a schedule of test sites and dates, and/or to download a CCHT examination application please visit the NNCC website at www.nncc-exam.org.

The Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT)

The BONENT offers an examination for Hemodialysis Technician Certification, which leads to designation as a a Certified Hemodialysis Technician (CHT). With a minimum of 12 continuous months working in nephrology technology, technicians are eligible to take the CHT exam.

The BONENT examination for CHT measures technical proficiency in five major areas of practice, as well as tasks performed in the scope of hemodialysis technology:

1) patient care (65%)
2) machine technology (10%)
3) water treatment (5%)
4) dialyzer reprocessing (5%)
5) education/personal development (15%)

The National Association of Nephrology Technicians/Technologists (NANT) recognizes the CHT examination as a professional measure of proficiency for all hemodialysis technicians.
