The Attentive Dialysis Technician
The dialysis technician is the primary care provider for patients undergoing dialysis treatment. While working closely with, and under direct supervision of registered nurses, they are an important member of the patient care team. While a nurse is responsible for the overall care of the patient the dialysis technician is responsible for making decisions and providing guidance any time the treatment varies from normal parameters or the patient’s condition becomes unstable.
The assigned duties of the dialysis technician include, but are not limited to:
Maintaining professional conduct, good communication skills, and confidentiality while caring for patients, working with the nursing staff to identify and meet patient goals, assembling necessary medical supplies, recording post dialysis vital signs, temperature, and weight, communicating the emotional, medical, psychosocial, and nutritional concerns to the nursing staff, and the discarding dialysis supplies and sanitizing equipment in accordance with manufacturer and unit protocols.
