Three Credentialing Programs for Dialysis Technicians/Technologists
The Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission/NNCCAfter six continuous months of working in nephrology technology, technicians are eligible to take the CCHT. The CCHT certification exam measures cognitive levels of understanding in four (4) dialysis practice areas: 1)clinical (50%), 2) technical (23%), 3) environmental (15%) and 4) role (12%)
The NANT acknowledges that the CCHT exam is an authentic measure of basic competency for hemodialysis patient care technicians. For information on the CCHT examination, a schedule of test sites and dates, and/or to download a CCHT examination application please visit the NNCC website at www.nncc-exam.org.
The BONENT offers an examination for Hemodialysis Technician Certification, which leads to designation as a a Certified Hemodialysis Technician (CHT). With a minimum of 12 continuous months working in nephrology technology, technicians are eligible to take the CHT exam.
The BONENT examination for CHT measures technical proficiency in five major areas of practice, as well as tasks performed in the scope of hemodialysis technology:
1) patient care (65%)
2) machine technology (10%)
3) water treatment (5%)
4) dialyzer reprocessing (5%)
5) education/personal development (15%)
The National Association of Nephrology Technicians/Technologists (NANT) recognizes the CHT examination as a professional measure of proficiency for all hemodialysis technicians. The Board of Nephrology Examiners, Inc. Nursing and Technology (BONENT) examinations are given by Applied Measurement Professionals, Inc. (AMP).
The National Nephrology Certification Organization (NNCO)
NNCO offers two examinations: Clinical Nephrology Technology, leading to the Certification in Clinical Nephrology Technology (CCNT) designation, and Biomedical Nephrology Technology, leading to the Certification in Biomedical Nephrology Technology (CBNT) designation.
After 12 continuous months working experience in nephrology technology, technicians are eligible to take both the CCNT and CBNT exams.
The certification in Clinical Nephrology Technology examination measures knowledge in four major areas:
- principles of dialysis (25%)
- machine preparation and operation (20%)
- patient assessment (20%)
- treatment (35%)
The certification in Biomedical Nephrology Technology exam measures knowledge in six major areas:
- principles of dialysis (25%)
- scientific concepts (15%)
- electronic applications (10%)
- water treatment (20%)
- equipment functions (20%)
- environmental/regulatory issues (10%)
NANT acknowledges the CBNT examination an approved measure of current competence in the specialized area of practice of biomedical hemodialysis technicians.
The National Nephrology Certification Organization (NNCO) Certification Examinations in Clinical Nephrology Technology and Biomedical Nephrology Technology are given by the Professional Testing Corporation.
